Arthritis is the term used for inflammation of one or more joints. Symptoms include pain and joint stiffness, swelling, deformity and impaired movement. Sometimes a grating noise can be heard when the joint is moved. Conditions which are often associated with arthritis, are fibromyalgia, gout, lupus, scleroderma and ankylosing spondilitis. A joint is made up of two adjacent bone endpoints, which meet each other at the joint. Each bone end is covered with a layer of smooth cartilage, with a jelly-like liquid (sinovial fluid) in between to ensure that the bones glide smoothly over each other.

The entire joint is encapsulated by a tough capsule, made from strong, fibrous ligaments. A problem in any one of these structures, can lead to arthritis. Osteo-arthritis happens when the cartilage at the bone endpoints, degenerates. This is usually associated with old age, as a result of wear and tear over the years. The smooth cartilage surface becomes rough, which causes friction between the bones. Especially the weightbearing joints (knees, hips and spine) are affected, but it commonly occurs in hands and knuckles as well. When the ligaments which encapsulate the joint weaken, the joint becomes deformed, painful and stiff.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease. The body’s immune system attacks the synovial membrane (lining the joint) as though it is foreign to the body. Inflammation follows, which damages the cartilage, bone and tissue in and around the joint. The body tries to repair the damage by forming scar tissue, which fills the space between the two bones, or may even ‘fuse’ (bind) the two bones together. There is a relationship between rheumatoid arthritis and emotional stress and tension, poor nutrition and bacterial infections. Rheumatoid arthritis affects all joints, while arthritis is usually limited to one or two joint. Arthritis is common in people above the age of sixty, while rheumatoid arthritis can strike at any age. Gout is an acute form of inflammatory arthritis, and is common in people who indulge in rich food and alcohol.

Gout attacks the smaller joints, for example the big toe joint. Uric acid crystals are deposited in the joint, causing swelling, redness, heat sensation and extreme pain. 90% of persons suffering from gout, are male.
This is a potent combination for the relief of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back-and neckpain, as well as gout and degenerative cartilage conditions. Chondroitin Sulphate helps to strength joints, ligaments and tendons, while Glucosamine is very important in the formation of bone, cartilage and tendons, as well as the production of sinovial fluid (lubricant between two adjacent bones). MSM is a substance which reduces inflammation and repairs joint tissue.

Boswellia, a herb which is used abundantly in Indian Ayurvedic medicine, reduces inflammation by repairing the blood vesels feeding the cartilage of the joint. Devil’s Claw relieves pain and reduces inflammation in the joints.
